Father arrested for cover-up in fatal Colorado crash

A father is facing multiple misdemeanor and felony charges after allegedly attempting to cover up his son’s involvement in an accident that took the lives of two women earlier this summer. Now, both men could receive jail time for their actions on the day of the fatal crash. The motor vehicle accident took place as the father and son were traveling through Colorado to a rodeo in Wyoming. The 16-year-old boy was driving a tractor truck pulling a horse trailer when the vehicle drifted off the road and crashed into the women, who had pulled over to the side of the road to change a flat tire on their car. Both the women, who were cousins, were killed in the accident. It was after the crash that the father became involved. He told his son not to stop the vehicle until about half a mile after the accident, at which time another person came and picked the boy up. The father then told police that it was he who had been driving at the time of the crash.

However, police soon determined that it was the boy who had been driving when the accident occurred, and arrested both the father and son. The boy is facing two felony counts of leaving the scene of an accident involving death and a misdemeanor count of careless driving resulting death. The father is also charged with leaving the scene, as well as two felony counts of attempting to influence a public servant.

The father’s motivation for attempting to protect his son is not clear. It is possible that he believed that police would not find his son legally licensed to operate the tractor truck. However, Colorado law simply requires that out-of-state drivers comply with the age and licensing requirements in their home states. In the family’s home state of Louisiana, the boy was licensed to operate the tractor truck. And now, both are facing much more serious consequences.
