Officer injured in car crash on Colorado highway

A two-vehicle accident occurred involving a motorist and a law enforcement officer. The car crash took place on a Colorado highway while the officer was investigating a previous traffic related incident. The seemingly inattentive driver crashed into the police car. Charges may indeed be filed against the driver that reportedly struck the police vehicle.According to reports, the accident occurred on Thursday night when a traffic official was already at the scene of a prior accident. While investigating, the officer made sure she had on the appropriate signals and also turned on the flashing arrows to redirect traffic. The driver of a van approached, but apparently failed to follow the warning signs. He veered off onto the left shoulder and slammed into the officer’s vehicle. The impact caused the vehicle to hit another police car that was also at the scene. The officer was transported to the hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the van and an occupant were also injured in the crash. Authorities believe that there is a possibility that the driver was operating at an inappropriate speed for icy road conditions in addition to being in a closed lane.

The officer is likely suffering a significant amount of pain and suffering related to the car crash. Since she suffered serious injuries, she may be required to miss time from work to make a full recovery. Separate from criminal charges, victims retain the right to bring on personal injury litigation to seek recovery of damages for their suffering and out-of-pocket expenses. A Colorado civil court ruling may order the van’s driver to compensate the officer if evidence demonstrates the driver’s behavior on the road was a causal factor to the crash.
